Spire View Houses
Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan, Ireland
Spire View Houses drew inspiration from the local rural vernacular forms which dot the drumlins of Monaghan. These are characterised by stone monoform structures which are punctured by irregular vertical windows, each of which is capped with a simple lintel. Spire View Houses modernise this rural aesthetic with structural stone piers separated by openings and linked with a continuous lintel.
The extension to the existing 1850s house was designed as a congruous form, but contemporised in its facade, layout and materiality. The second house is crowned with a charred timber top which sits within the shadows of the surrounding mature trees. Both buildings are set into the rolling hillside which overlook the river below. A soft timber interior of muted tones draws the eye to the surrounding verdure.
